Description
Citrulline malate consists of two complementary components: L-citrulline and malate (a salt of malic acid). L-citrulline is an important intermediate amino acid in arginine and nitric oxide metabolism, which is converted into L-arginine in the body. L-arginine is a key precursor for the production of nitric oxide (NO); NO is involved as a signaling molecule in the regulation of vascular tone and muscle metabolism.
Scientific studies have shown that L-citrulline supplementation is more effective in increasing plasma L-arginine levels than direct L-arginine supplementation, as it bypasses the first-pass restriction of intestinal-hepatic metabolism, making more arginine available for nitric oxide synthesis. (Schwedhelm et al., Br J Clin Pharmacol, 2008)
Malate (malic acid) is an intermediate metabolite of the Krebs cycle, which is naturally involved in energy production processes. Taking citrulline in the form of citrulline malate therefore not only ensures better stability and utilization of L-citrulline, but also supports cellular energy metabolism. This combination can be particularly beneficial for athletes, as it contributes to maintaining natural energy turnover and the metabolic conditions for post-workout regeneration.
Overall, citrulline malate is a complex form of amino acid that supports the body with a dual mechanism of action: on the one hand, through the arginine-NO pathway, and on the other hand, through the malate component involved in energy production.
